The Awards go biennial
Published: 8 October 2020

To allow us to continue hosting the Awards they will now run every second year. The next season will open for entry in the second half of 2021, and books created after 1 January 2020 will be eligible for entry.  The announcement of the 2022 Award series winners will occur in early 2022.

2019 Winners announced

Congrats to our 2019 winners, announced on Friday 6 March 2020 at the Photobook/NZ festival opening night at Te Papa, Wellington, New Zealand. Legendary Spanish photobook maker and Magnum member, Cristina de Middel, handed out the prizes:
  • Photobook Winner: Apókryphos by Cherine Fahd, published by M.33, Melbourne
  • Photobook Commended: Jump Into Bed With Me by Paul Knight, published by Perimeter Editions
  • Photobook Commended:Tem Bigato Nessa Goiaba self published by Cecilia Sordi Campos

The winners will be announced on Friday 6 March 2020 at the Photobook/NZ festival opening night, hosted at Te Papa in Wellington, New Zealand. The legendary Spanish photo book maker and Magnum member, Cristina de Middel, will be handing out the prizes.

Thanks to our judging panel: Ann Shelton, Angel Luis Gonzalez of PhotoIreland, Rachel Knepfer, Scott Bundy of Bundy Agency and Claire Murdoch of Random House NZ. Judges reviewed digital files and physical books, and judging occurred by vote. Not all judges agreed with all finalists selected.

Thanks also to Sonja Gardiner of Studio 541, Anita Totha of Remote Photobooks and Nataasha Menon for their generous assistance.

2018 Award Exhibition opens

The 2018 Award exhibition has now been launched and will travel extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand in 2019. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to cast their vote for the People's Choice Award, the winner of which receives $500 cash + $1,500 Momento Pro print credit.

  • 3-26 May 2019: Photival, Wellington (NZ)

  • 2-4 August 2019: Maud Gallery, Brisbane (AU)

2018 Awards open for entry

The 2018 Award is now open for entry with a cash and print prize pool valued at $13,500.  Australian and New Zealand photo book creators and publishers are invited to enter into the Photobook or Student category, with digital files due by 17 December 2018 and physical copies due by 17 January 2019.  Full Terms and Conditions are available here.
 
Australian & New Zealand Photobook of the Year Awards combine

This year the Australian Photobook of the Year Awards will merge with the New Zealand Photobook of the Year Awards to form the Australia & New Zealand Photobook Award, with more prizes, more prestige and more competition. The 2018 Award will be open for entry on the new website in November.
 
 
James Bugg wins the 2017 Australian People's Choice Award

Congratulations to James Bugg whose photo book The Pines won the popular vote with visitors to the Award exhibition. He wins $500 cash and $2,000 in Momento Pro print credit. James is having a great year, having also taken out the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize in May. Learn more.
 
 
Howard Greive wins the 2017 New Zealand People's Choice Award
